Course Aims:

To help learners become skilled listeners and confident communicators.

Qualification Objectives:

  • Develop a basic understanding of what counselling is about and be able to compare and contrast counselling with other forms of helping activities.
  • Introduce you to an experiential learning process that will include a high elements of personal growth work to develop self-esteem and enhance self-confidence.
  • Consider the basic theories and approaches underpinning counselling and psychotherapeutic practice.

Course Content:

Three mandatory assessed units:

  1. The Professional Context of Counselling provides a basic understanding to counsellors.  Learners will develop an understanding of what counselling is and an appreciation that qualified counsellors and those who use counselling skills abide by an ethical framework.  They will learn about the importance of creating the correct environment and the right ethos for helping relationships to be successful.
  2. Communication Skills in Helping Relationships will help learners explore effective communication skills.  They will demonstrate a range of listening and responding skills to establish, develop and close interactions.
  3. An Introduction to Personal Development gives learners the opportunity to reflect on their personal development and identify areas for development in the future.

Entry Criteria:

There are no formal entry requirements for this programme, although it is expected that candidates will be open to experiential exercises and be prepared to discuss their self-awareness within a group setting.  Candidates need to be fully committed to attending all sessions and complete a learning log throughout the programme.
