Why would you want to study the Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling at 1point?:

1point is a collaboration of local charities who are committed to promoting the use of talking therapy services to help individuals, couples and communities access and develop skills to help themselves and others lead more fulfilling lives.  We do this by supporting up to a 160 therapeutic practitioners deliver counselling and psychotherapy to over 350 clients per week.

About 40 per cent of our current therapists are in training with a variety of different providers.  Our organisation was created by people who have had extensive experience in the development and teaching of professional counselling programmes.  We believe that 1point can offer learners an holistic experience of our profession by directly delivering our own nationally recognised qualification on site.  Not only can we guarantee a 100 hours placement in our busy member organisation, but also provide networking opportunities to our successful candidates looking for both paid work or developing their own voluntary services in the future.

We will also accept candidates who may have secured a placement outside the 1point network, on condition that it meets our criteria as a suitably managed and appropriate location to host a trainee counsellor.

Course Aim:

The course represents the final stage of counsellor training and focuses on personal and professional development required to work as a fully functioning practitioner.  It is primarily aimed at those who want to work as counsellors, but we also recognise that many people undertake this training to enhance their career development in other fields, typically teaching, health care, nursing and social services.

Course Overview:

The course will take place over two academic years, but be delivered in a variety of formats, including weekly didactic teaching sessions, half and full day workshops and potentially two residential weekends.  The course will be delivered by a lead tutor and a teaching team to help candidates experience a range of different practitioner approaches.  A full schedule of the programme will be available in advance to those who have registered an interest in the course.

You will study the following units on the programme:

  • Professional and Organisational Issues in Counselling
  • Counselling in a Diverse Society
  • Counselling Theory
  • Advanced Counselling Skills
  • Self-Awareness for Counsellors
  • Research Methodologies in Counselling
  • Management of the Counselling Placement

Progression to the second year is dependent on meeting specific criteria, including achieving passes in first year assignments and satisfactory reports from your placement provider and clinical supervisor.

Entry Criteria:

The minimum requirement will be the successful completion of a Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills programme (minimum 145 delivery hours), a reference from your Level 3 tutor and a second satisfactory reference from someone who is able to comment on the application of your personal and ethical values in practice.

All candidates will be interviewed by the 1point Course teaching team.  During this interview we will be looking for the following evidence:

  • You are able to work to an academic level equivalent to a first year degree standard.
  • You are able to commit a significant amount of extra time outside the programme hours to undertake course work, placement hours (a minimum of 100 over a two year period), clinical supervision (a minimum of 1 one and half hour sessions for every 12 hours placement work or once a month) and potentially personal therapy, if you and the tutors feel it is necessary to your professional and personal development.
  • A portfolio of assessed work from your Level 3 programme.
  • A commitment to becoming a student member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and adhering to the BACP's Ethical Framework.
  • A commitment to personal development.

If selected, you will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS check

Course Fees and Timings:

To be confirmed closer to the date.  We are hoping to introduce flexible payment schemes and attract sponsorship for bursaries which will allow more learners to access the programme.  Further details will be posted on this website or by email (if you have previously registered your interest), once confirmed.
