SEG Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills

Our new modular course now provides participants access to achieve a nationally accredited counselling Level 3 qualification.

The scheme has been designed to allow learners to enrol on one programme and choose one of two potential outcomes to suit their current needs:

Non-accredited counselling and communication skills training – aimed at people who wish to attend the programme to enhance skills and job role, but do want to achieve the national accredited qualification. Learners on this pathway, may convert to the full programme, if they successfully complete the externally moderated module assessments during the course.

Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills only (Accredited by SEG, formerly ABC), targeted at people who have previously obtained a Level 2 Award in Counselling or equivalent.

The programme is not just an essential requirement for a future counselling career, but an opportunity to understand yourself and be more confident when working with others in need. This scheme introduces essential skills and rapidly moves into increasing your knowledge and experience gained through the subsequent Level 3 programme. Successful candidates, who complete the full programme, will have the opportunity to progress onto 1point’s professional Level 4 programme.

This qualification is suitable for:

  • Those who want to learn Counselling Skills in other professional or helping roles
  • Those who want to improve their professional and personal relationships as part of personal development
  • Those starting the first and second level of training as a Professional Counsellor

This training programme can lead to new employment opportunities, and increase employability for those whose role is to support others in health and social care work, teaching and learning, advocacy and mediation, support and project work, other helping roles. The Level 3 Certificate is also a requirement for those who wish to progress onto a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and achieve a Professional Practice status as a Professional Counsellor.

Interested, but not sure?

We appreciate that joining a programme of learning takes commitment and courage. Working with hundreds of clients we know that many people are interested in learning more about how our profession has helped them and how they could develop their existing skills and knowledge to help others. This new programme is available to those who are interested in being part of a group of like-minded people, but do not necessarily want to complete a qualification. For a reduced fee you can participate in the programme, but will not be required to complete the course assessments.

Course Contents

You will learn to identify core counselling skills alongside understanding how these are practiced in a counselling relationship. You will gain an understanding of how to establish an effective working relationship and will consider the boundaries which need to be respected in this sensitive role.

Understanding the Context for the use of Counselling Skills – This unit is intended to deepen the learners’ understanding of the significant differences between a person who uses counselling skills in other occupations and a fully trained and qualified counsellor. Learners will explore key legal and ethical issues based on an ethical framework for counselling and psychotherapy in a multi-cultural and diverse society. The need for and the importance of casework supervision will be highlighted.

Understanding Counselling Theory – In this unit, learners will study in depth one major therapeutic model of counselling to empower the learners reflection of its value and use when working with people. Then reflect on two other therapeutic models of counselling to raise awareness and comparison.

Using Counselling Skills – Through practice, learners will explore a range of skills used within the counselling profession. Additionally, they will understand that sessions in which counselling skills are used are professionally managed activities with a start, middle and end. Cultural differences are recognised, acknowledged and worked with.

Personal Development for Users of Counselling Skills – In this unit, learners reflect on how the study of counselling theory, the use of counselling skills and feedback received can inform personal development and growth, in particular their understanding of self. In counselling, self-awareness is needed as a self-development tool in order to help clients. Without looking at self in depth, it is difficult to offer high-quality counselling to clients. Personal development promotes accepting self, more fully, so allowing the Counsellor to offer the same acceptance to others.
